Partnership between the state and the Social Security Administration to develop a more streamlined approach to enrolling seniors in need in CalFresh Program (formally food stamp program)
Under existing law, the State Department of Social Services administers CalFresh at the state level, and has certain specified duties in that regard.
This bill was introduced by Assembly Member Beall on behalf of Catholic Charities of California United and the California Food Policy Advocates. Currently, only 5% of seniors in California on social security that are eligible for CalFresh are enrolled in the program. This legislation would request the California State Legislature to direct the State Department of Social Services to establish a pilot program in two counties in conjunction with the Social Security Administration, to enroll eligible Social Security recipients into CalFresh (food stamps) by utilizing existing information maintained by Social Security Administration.
This bill was voted out of the Appropriations Committee.
