HOW ARE DONATIONS ALLOCATED?
Meals-on-Wheels Greater San Diego, Inc. is a 501 (c) (3) not for profit organization. All donations are appreciated and tax deductible. When you make a donation to Meals-on-Wheels, 83 cents of every dollar goes directly toward providing meals and other services to seniors.

Giving for Operational Support, Specific Project or Equipment
Although seniors pay a maximum fee of $7.00 per day for delivery of two meals, the fees do not cover our costs to provide the meals. The full cost of the program is subsidized for 100% of our seniors, most of whom live on a fixed income. Because we believe that food is one of life’s most basic necessities and no one should ever have to go hungry, fees may be further reduced for seniors who cannot afford $7.00 per day. Gifts made for general operating support help to ensure ongoing meal delivery to seniors.
$200.00 provides the needed funding for 120 meals.
$100.00 provides the needed funding for 60 meals.
$ 50.00 provides the needed funding for 30 meals.
Meals-on-Wheels often seeks support of a specific project or to purchase equipment, such as thermal bags to keep meals at appropriate temperature during delivery, and is currently in need of donations to support purchase of the following items:

Memorial Giving
Memorial Giving provides you, the donor, the opportunity to remember special individuals with a memorial or tribute gift. Gifts may be made “In Memory of” an individual to commemorate a loved one’s life, or “In Honor of” an individual who is special in your life. Gifts may also be made in honor of special occasions, such as birthdays and anniversaries.
At your request, Meals-on-Wheels will send a hand-written card to the individual whom you designate to notify them of your gift. The amount will not be disclosed.

The Need
Meals-on-Wheels Greater San Diego, Inc. has seven trucks that are part of a unique delivery system designed to provide meals to an average of 1,000 seniors a day throughout San Diego County. The trucks bring meals and equipment to seventeen sites around San Diego County. These seventeen sites are where volunteers gather to pick up meals for delivery to clients.
The trucks are approximately eight years old and at various stages of nearing the end of their useful life. As the truck fleet ages, we are incurring increasing maintenance and repair costs. Some of the older trucks are in and out of the repair shop on a regular basis. Additionally, the trucks are not fuel efficient. Between rising maintenance/repair costs and increasingly higher gas prices, keeping the trucks in service is putting a strain on the agency’s operating budget. Meals-on-Wheels has identified a more economic option to meet our current operational needs. Each truck will be replaced with extended cargo vans.
Why Vans?
- The replacement cost for the delivery trucks is currently estimated at $40,000 each. The present estimated cost of a van is $25,000 each, a $15,000 difference per vehicle. Replacing all seven trucks with vans will save $105,000 in initial replacement costs.
- The extended cargo vans can carry the same amount of equipment as the delivery trucks.
- The vans get better gas mileage than the delivery trucks.
- New vans mean less immediate costs in repairs. Also, service and parts for the vans will cost less than for the trucks over the life of the vehicles.
- The vans are air conditioned, which helps maintain cold meal temperatures. This is particularly important on the East County and inland North County delivery routes where temperatures in the summer can exceed 100 degrees.
- The vans offer more flexibility of use. Occasionally, our truck drivers must deliver a route that does not have a volunteer. The trucks are not able to enter some neighborhood areas (motor home parks, senior living complexes, etc.). The vans will allow our delivery drivers better access to individual routes as necessary.
- Because the cargo vans are more “driver-friendly,” it will be easier for Meals-on-Wheels to recruit and retain drivers.
