All of our menus meet the health standard for senior nutrition.  Our nutritionist, Katie Clark, MPH, RD, CDE, along with her hand-picked interns, Erica Teran and Yesenia Alvarado, both SDSU nutrition students, have concentrated on a nutritional analysis of our menu items as well as some new offerings  to better serve our clients’ needs.  For detailed nutritional questions, please call our Nutrition hot Line at 619 858-1006, where you can speak directly to one of our experts.  If our experts are not available, please leave a message and your called will be returned promptly.

Healthy Plus Menu Selections

Meals-on-Wheels Greater San Diego offers the following menu options: Diabetic-Friendly, Lower Fat/Lower Sodium, and Easy-to-Chew. The menus are prepared by a registered dietitian to ensure balanced meals throughout the week.

The Diabetic-Friendly diet avoids food high in concentrated sweets to assist in restricting total carbohydrates in the diet. The diabetic meals provided do not restrict total calories, though fat is reduced. Clients with diabetes may need to limit some foods provided in the two meals to meet their individual needs for carbohydrate and calorie reduction and/or be mindful of their own breakfast and personal snack choices.

The Lower Fat/Lower Sodium menu provides two meals with a lower sodium content. Special reduced sodium products are used to meet these guidelines. The menu is planned so that only approximately 30% of the calories are from fat. The amount, as well as the type of fat, is restricted in this menu.

The Easy-to-Chew menu provides foods that are modified in texture for those who may have difficulty chewing. These meals may include softer foods such as macaroni, pudding, and diced fruit. This menu has food that is not pureed, blended.

*Note: We ask that each Meals-on-Wheels recipient review their own personal dietary restrictions.  The recipient is responsible for determining if our meals will work within their own restrictions and in conjunction with the food choices made outside the Meals-on-Wheels offerings.
